Sam Allardyce: Everton send survey to fans asking to rate manager

Everton have sent a survey to a group of supporters asking them to rate manager Sam Allardyce's performance on a scale of zero to 10.

The survey is part of an exercise with a fan panel designed to discover how connected they feel to the club.

Fans are asked to rate the statement: "I have a high level of trust in the current manager and coaching staff... e.g. in making the right decisions to get the best out of the team."

Allardyce, 63, took charge in November.

He has guided Everton to ninth in the Premier League after taking 27 points from 20 games since replacing the sacked Ronald Koeman.

However, there has been growing discontent among some supporters over what they perceive as a negative playing style.

Allardyce suffered abuse from supporters during and after Saturday's 1-1 draw at Swansea City, having been subjected to similar treatment after the defeat at Burnley on 3 March.

Speculation surrounds Allardyce's future and there are suggestions owner Farhad Moshiri is contemplating a summer managerial change.

Former Watford boss Marco Silva - Moshiri's first choice after Koeman was sacked last October - is now available after his dismissal at Vicarage Road and Shakhtar Donetsk's Portuguese coach Paulo Fonseca has also been linked with the post.

PSV Eindhoven's sporting director Marcel Brands is to give a decision soon on whether he will move to Everton, which would call into question the future of director of football Steve Walsh.

Everton send out a fan survey several times a year. The club sent the same list of questions to some fans last May, including one out about their view on Koeman.

The latest one also asks supporters to rate their level of trust in players being "loyal and performing at their best", and the club's senior leadership team.

There are questions too about how Everton are portrayed in the media and on the overall direction of the club.

'It's disrespectful to the manager' - Stubbs

Former Everton defender Alan Stubbs said it is "disrespectful" for the club to ask supporters to mark Allardyce in a survey.

"I'm very surprised by it," said the former Toffees centre-back. "I don't think it is good in the sense that there is only going to be one answer and it is not going to be positive.

"There is no denying it, there is an element of Everton fans, and it is growing, that would not like to see Sam there next year.

"I really feel sorry for Sam and his staff that they are having to deal with this in the public.

"They asked for the fans' opinion on the new stadium and how they want it built, which I think is great. But in terms of asking about a manager, I think that is very disrespectful.

"I feel sorry for him. He has come in and did the job that he was expected to do."

This seems daft. If the average response to that question is 4 out of 10 are they going to sack Allardyce?

Pretty harsh on the manager I'd say, and a bit classless by Everton. They were struggling when he took over and he has got them up to 9th! Be careful what you wish for....

I feel this article is somewhat misleading. It sounds like Everton have sent fans a survey (which is obviously a regular thing) and one of the questions is regarding the faith in the current management team, among other questions which are not related to the management team. Bit of a non-story?

I have and completed the survey, it asks a number of questions about the direction of the club and our opinions on fan engagement with the club. Management at all levels was surveyed, not Just Allardyce, the club regularly surveys its fan base on every aspect, and they do it very well in my opinion. I gave Sam a bang average 5 for a bang average Manager.

I think Everton's season is pretty much what they should have expected. They sold their main goalscorer and didn't replace him. It's hardly a recipe for success.

Considering the mess they were in earlier, he deserves at least a 5 just for avoiding a relegation fight.

But the team clearly aren't playing to their potential either - I'd say 6/10.

Having held a season ticket at my local club for 5 years and working in an office with a large number of fans of the same club - i can assure you that the vast majority of fans have no idea what's good for their club, are deluded, and have memories that last about 2 weeks

Only Everton could announce a new stadium, spend £200 million on new players and still somehow manage to have their fans even more angry and miserable than they were last season.

So Everton try and engage with their fans regarding the club they love and respect. Sounds like good stakeholder engagement if you ask me. Besides it isn't a survey just on Big Sam - its much more wide ranging - and it isn't like the survey is a one off - its happens numerous times a year. Bit of a none-story trying to agitate a reaction.

They did not want Sam and chased everyone but him. When they had no luck and were in trouble they reluctantly hired him. This was clearly a short term fix to avoid the worst case and not for the long term. He's done what they hired him to and as he's not popular they want rid of him. So they should either stick with the choice THEY made or do what they clearly want and sack him.

Doesn't matter how many surveys they send out, the board appointed him and they should know when to release him. This is a marketing exercise to try and show Everton as a 'people's club'. Which is just a distraction to show how far behind they are from the big clubs of the Premiership!

Football has moved on. Sam will still get results and as such he'll continue to be a favourite to bring in to shore up a sinking ship so to speak. But Premier League boards in particular, are now becoming concerned with image as well as results. Football being played in the 'right' way to attract fans, local and global is becoming increasingly important to EPL regulars for their 'brands'.
